What is TAVI (TranscatheterAortic Valve Implantation) Surgery?

Basic Definition and Features

TAVI is a minimally invasive heart valve treatment method. A specially developed biological valve (23-29 mm) is placed in the heart through the femoral artery in the groin area. The catheter system used in the procedure is 14-16 French (4.7-5.3 mm) in diameter.

Procedure Flow and Technology

The procedure is performed in hybrid operating rooms, under the guidance of high-resolution X-ray fluoroscopy and 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). It is completed in 45-90 minutes by experienced teams under deep sedation or general anaesthesia.

Patient Profile and Advantages

TAVI is particularly suitable for patients over 75 years of age, with uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c>7.5), severe COPD (FEV1<50%), advanced kidney disease and high risk (STS>8% or EuroSCORE II>10%). As the sternum is not cut, recovery is fast, blood loss is minimal (200-300 ml) and hospital stay is 3-5 days.

Success Rates and LongITerm Results

The technical success rate is over 98.5% in experienced centres, and 30-day mortality is below 1.5%. The daily activity capacity increases in 85% of patients, and the 6-minute walking distance rises from 200 to 350 metres. The 5-year survival rate (72%) is significantly higher than with drug therapy (50%).
