What is a Lumpectomy?

Basic Information

A lumpectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in breast cancer where only the tumorous area and the surrounding safe margin of tissue are removed, preserving the natural appearance of the breast.

Details of the Surgical Procedure

The procedure is carried out in two stages:

  • Precise localisation of the tumour using ultrasound or stereotactic mammography
  • Careful excision of the tumour and the protective surrounding tissue

Who is it Suitable For?

Lumpectomy is ideal for the following patient groups:

  • Patients with a single tumour less than 4 cm in size
  • Those diagnosed with early-stage (Stage I or IIA) breast cancer
  • Patients with medium to large breast structure

When combined with radiotherapy, it provides over 98% five-year survival rates in early stages.

Recovery Process and FollowIup

The recovery process involves the following stages:

  • First 48 hours: Swelling and pain management
  • First 2 weeks: Daily sterile wound care and controlled movements
  • 3-4 weeks: Return to daily activities
