General Information and Success Rates
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is one of the most effective metabolic surgical methods. It provides a 85-90% permanent weight loss, especially in patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 40.
Surgical Procedure
Using modern laparoscopic techniques, it is performed through 5-6 small incisions (0.5-1.5 cm). The 90-120 minute procedure reduces the stomach volume to 30-50 ml and reconstructs a 100-150 cm section of the small intestine. This reduces the daily calorie intake to 800-1,000 calories.
Recovery Process
With modern pain management protocols, patients experience minimal discomfort and are usually discharged within 48-72 hours.
Nutrition and Follow-up Programme
The nutrition programme progresses in five stages: clear liquids in the first week, protein drinks in the second week, pureed foods in 15-30 days, soft foods in 30-45 days, and normal eating after 45 days. Daily multivitamin, iron, calcium citrate, B12 and D3 supplements are essential for success.
Long-Term Outcomes
90% of patients lose 65-75% of their excess weight within the first year and maintain this success after 5 years. Improvement rates for metabolic diseases are: 85% for type 2 diabetes, 75% for high blood pressure, 85% for sleep apnoea, and 90% for hyperlipidaemia. Patients are monitored every 3 months in the first year and every 6 months thereafter.
