Procedure and Eligibility Criteria
The gastric balloon is a minimally invasive treatment method for patients with a body mass index between 27-35. FDA-approved biocompatible silicone balloons (Orbera® or ReShape®) are endoscopically placed under 15-20 minutes of sedation. The balloon is inflated with 400-700 ml of saline solution and methylene blue. Methylene blue serves as an early warning system by changing the urine colour in case of potential complications.
Treatment Process and Weight Loss Phase
Side effects that may occur in the first 72 hours (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain) are controlled with standard medication protocols. The nutrition programme progresses in three stages: first week 800 calorie liquid diet, second week 1,000 calorie puree, from the third week onwards 1,200-1,400 calorie soft foods. With a combined exercise programme three times a week, patients lose an average of 12-13 kg in 3 months and 18-19 kg in 6 months.
Balloon Removal and Long-Term Outcomes
The balloon is removed after a maximum of 180 days, in a 10-15 minute procedure following a 48-hour liquid diet and 12-hour fasting. With a 12-month follow-up programme (monthly nutritional counselling, regular check-ups and exercise programme), 75% of patients maintain the majority of their weight loss. In three-year follow-ups, 65% of patients who fully adhered to the programme remain within a healthy BMI range, and the risk of Type-2 diabetes is reduced by 60%.
