Breast Cancer Statistics According to the World Health Organisation

Global Breast Cancer Data (2023)

In 2023, 2,347,892 women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer. 52.3% of cases occurred in developed countries, and 47.7% in developing countries. Breast cancer ranks first among all cancer types, accounting for 11.7%. Risk factors are grouped into two main categories: Genetic factors (BRCA1 45%, BRCA2 35%) and lifestyle factors (overweight 35%, physical inactivity 28%, hormonal imbalance 25%).

Age Groups and Mortality Rates

The highest incidence rates are seen in the 40-49 age group (28%) and the 50-59 age group (24.5%). 38.2% of the annual 685,000 deaths are due to advanced stage diagnoses. Survival rates vary by stage: Stage IA 98.8%, Stage IB 97.5%, Stage IIIB 54.8%, and Stage IV 22.3%.

Comparison of Turkey and the World

In Turkey, 25,467 new cases were detected in 2023. In the regional distribution, Marmara (31.8%), Aegean (21.7%) and Central Anatolia (19.2%) are in the top positions. Participation in the national screening programme has increased from 35.2% to 62.4% over the last decade. This progress has been achieved by increasing the number of mobile screening units to 175 and digital mammography devices to 1,247. As a result, 78.3% of women aged 50-69 have had at least one mammogram in the last two years.
